Should you elope? Reasons to plan an elopement

Why Eloping makes more sense for some people

Why Elope?

I’ve had the pleasure of documenting so many beautiful elopements over the last few years. I always ask clients why they decided to elope and have heard so many different reasons. Most have answered that they didn’t want the hassle of the traditional big wedding. Some (like me) are introverted and don’t want to have to be so vulnerable in front of so many people. And for others, they have been married before and wanted to do something more low-key.

So, why elope? Everyone should have a wedding day that is an true, meaningful representation of their relationship and is perfect for them- whether that's a large traditional wedding or an elopement. The way in which you say your vows to your partner, matters. Your wedding day should be everything you've ever dreamed of. Whether that’s going for a hike at sunrise or spending a quiet day together at home . There are so many reasons to elope, but below are my top four.

The first reason to elope: Elopements can be less stressful than traditional weddings

There is an incredible amount of planning that goes into a wedding day. Whether that’s an elopement or a larger day. From my experience, planning a traditional wedding takes a lot more work than an elopement. Deciding to elope eliminates a ton of stress that comes with planning a traditional wedding. Elopements allow you to take away every expectation that other people have of how your wedding day should look. The logistics involved in organizing a large-scale event with intricate details quickly can become overwhelming. Deciding to scale back and plan a day around the two of you eliminates a ton of the stress that comes from a large traditional wedding.

The second reason to elope: Wanting a non-traditional day

While traditional weddings are beautiful, they aren’t for everyone. If you're not a fan of the traditional aspects of a wedding and want to do your own thing, then an elopement is perfect for you as you can do anything you want! You don’t have to have anyone walk you down the aisle, and you don’t need any guests (just one other person besides me to sign the paperwork). You don’t have to wear a dress or have your hair and makeup done (or you can do all of that). The beautiful thing about elopements is the freedom of choice with limited restrictions.

The third reason to elope: A love of Nature and Adventure

While I know not every elopement is outdoors, this particular reason is more personal. From a young age, I’ve had a pull to be outside. One of the reasons I made the switch to photographing more adventure elopements was the chance to hike and adventure with clients around incredible locations. We are so darn lucky here in Newfoundland to have such a diverse and unique landscape. Barren rocky areas, cliffs with a magical view and so many hidden gems all across the island. My goal is to see as much of the island as possible with clients who value the outdoors and want to spend their elopement in a way that showcases the beauty of this province.

Where does adventure come in? We have so many hikes and trails across the island. We also have boat tours (including zodiac tours) where you get to see humpbacks, icebergs and puffins up close. Or you take a helicopter to the top of a fjord to watch the sunset as you exchange private vows. There are so many ways to plan for your adventure here.

Along with lots of things to do, the weather plays a huge part in the adventure. It can be quite unpredictable and change in an instant. But it adds to the story of the day and the magic of the island. I love a foggy day and some wind. And running through the rain always causes a few laughs and some amazing memories.

Fourth reason to elope: You want to travel to a new location

Whenever I mention to locals that Newfoundland is a destination location, I always get a few laughs. But over the last few years, I’ve noticed a big trend in couples coming from all over the world to elope on our beautiful island. I’ve had clients from everywhere from Hawaii to the Philippines and all across Canada. And they all fall in love with our beautiful spot on the east coast. Whether you want to head to touristy areas like Signal Hill or Gros Morne. Or you want to go to a location no one has been to before, we have it all here! The best part, it’s never too busy at any of the locations.

Do you live in Newfoundland but have been wanting to visit a new location? Eloping is the perfect chance for that. There are so many amazing locations, some isolated and some a little more populated. Stay in a tent with the most amazing view of the stars, or in one of the unique air bnb’s along the ocean. There is a spot that will fit exactly what you are looking for to celebrate your love.

So, will you elope?

If you feel the pull to elope, it might be the right fit for you. If you still want a big wedding, that’s okay too! Many couples have also done a micro/intimate wedding which is a great option for meeting somewhere in the middle. Whatever you decide, make it the best day for you.

I’m currently booking 2024/25 elopements in Newfoundland. If you think I might be the right fit for you, reach out and we can plan your adventure!
